Thank you!

The love of my life

It is time to let it out.

I would like to ask for your permission to share with you my pain over the loss of my ultimate hero and the biggest supporter of Oiti: on April 25th I lost my adored mother.

To better phrase the beginning of this post, I would like to share with you the greatness of my mother’s life. A single mother of two, myself and my dear big brother, who overcame every obstacle to give us a good education and had as main goal to make good people out of us. I want to believe that she succeeded brilliantly. I will always try to honor her effort.

Oiti has lost its Godmother, the person who has always supported it with unconditional joy and enthusiasm.

When I started the company, she used to help me pack goods, stamp boxes and set booths in fairs. She even covered a few studio rents during tough times. Every time one of my products was featured on a magazine, she cheered me on as if I was a rock-star.

She was 61 when she left this world, but laughed and played around as if she was 21. She was the light of so many lives, specially mine. She touched so many hearts. She lived a life dedicated to help every and each person who had ever crossed her path. Her presence enlightened any room.

A dear friend, who lost his mother years ago, told me something that I am beginning to understand. He told me that life does not adjust after this kind of loss, instead it changes completely and we have to learn how to create and live a new life. This is exactly how I feel at this point.

For that, it is time to thank all my friends and family who are helping me to rebuild my life.

To my dear long-time-friends in Brazil and the ones spread around the world, I want to express my deepest gratitude. I love you.

Oiti will move on to the next phase in honor of Miss Neida Naves. Everything it will accomplish will carry her love and will, also, be a way of letting her light shine permanently, until the day I will have, again,  the greatest pleasure I ever felt in my life: the pleasure of being in her presence.

Gratitude is a healing feeling. Thank you all for your love and support.

É exatamente assim que me sinto nesse momento.

Finnish radio: Basso

If you want to listen to some great international music and also to the most peculiar language in the world, go to Basso Radio.

Basso is the coolest radio in Finland, their programs are sorted by music style and each of them has an expert Finnish DJ, of course, as host.

Basso’s filter for every kind of music is very good and fun. About the Finnish language between songs, I am sure it will be amusing to you, to say the least.   So, have a glance of what my life feels like in Helsinki, having Finnish as sound track. Time is flying before I get to learn it, unfortunately.

Ah! If you are lucky and persistent enough you’ll get to listen to some Finnish rap, which is actually… GOOD!

Check them out!

Secret Stash!

It had been a while since a contemporary design initiative got me really exited. But here it is and I am happy .

Ruby, a Taiwanese classmate from the Masters programme here in Helsiki, presented this video by another Taiwanese designer, Yiting Cheng. The designs and the video are so well though and made. Very consistent. Enjoy!

[Thanks Ruby]

The nice surprise was that I met Yiting Cheng a couple of years ago. We both took part at Designboom Mart exhibition in NYC in 2008. She is a co-founder of 22designstudio, wich designed the Concrete Rings. At the end of the Mart she gave me a Concrete Ring as a present and I gave her a gold Reminder Ring. Nice memory.

She is doing great, isn’t she?

Promoção na Grampo!

I am not sure if everybody understands quite well that I work in two companies: Oiti and Grampo. This is a good chance to briefly explain how it works.

Oiti is my baby, a company which I started in 2004, at 26, with a lot of passion and very little knowledge. Turned out, thank God,  passion was enough to keep me going through out my personal and professional learning saga. It was an adventure and it still is. I won’t prolong myself on describing Oiti because this is Oiti’s blog  and here or on the website you can find all the info you need about the company and myself.

Grampo is my Design Shop, which I founded together with my dear friend and competent fellow Architect Manoela Beneti in 2007. At Grampo we sell not only my own Oiti designs but a great range of young and already stablished designers. This place, located in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, has become the convergence point of great minds. Several collaborations took form there, since amazing people from different fields of design, architecture and art often run into each other at Grampo. The most spontaneous and delicious talks arise there on fantastic sunny saturday mornings.

Grampo is also a multifunctional space. Monoela’s Architecture studio, my own Architecture Studio and Oiti are all combined in the same place. So if we ever have the pleasure of your visit, you will see a very alive place, full of visual information: great designs and very happy people working hard on what they love to do.

Grampo is on Summer sale! It will be a pleasure to receive your visit!

Young Finnish Architecture!

14m2 Summer cottage

Inside

Wine?

Levels. Everything is about levels. Mastering them is a gift… or hard work, of course!

This is why I love Finnish Architecture: simplicity + objectivity = beauty. This equation has been resulting into a consistent Architecture production for the past century in this country. This one is no different example and it is all packed up into 14m2. How great can it be? Great! The Architect Jussi Palva from Verstas welcomed us to his tiny summer cottage (almost every Finn owns one) in a beautiful afternoon, just a few steps from the Batlic Sea. What I found very interesting is how they re-interpreted the very strict Finnish regulation concerning the aesthetic standards in the area into this prety thing. Sorry about the girlish adjectives, I can’t help myself. Check it out!

Welcome to Iitala’s Factory!

This was another fantastic experience made possible by Adélia Borges. This is Iitala Factory! The visit followed a great dinner with all Iitala’s designers. I set right next to the legendary Oiva Toikka, what else could I ask for?
